Deborah Potter, executive director of NewsLab, an online resource center for journalists based in Washington, has published an interesting guide for professionals uitilizan Internet as a space separate publication.
The manual, published in English under the title Handbook of Independent Journalism and translated into Castilian by Angel Carlos Gonzalez, has the support of the Department of State, United States, and is divided into eight chapters: What is news, how to get the story, how to tell the story, the story editor, electronic media and Internet, specialized journalism, ethics and law and journalistic resources.
In the introductory chapter the author refers to the role of journalists and the responsibilities of this profession, according to Potter, is basically to "provide accurate information and present it in an impartial and independent of external influences." Only in this way, ensures the citizens' may function in a free society. "
As defined by its author, the guide was conceived as an "introduction to the fundamentals of journalism", among which is a crucial as is the separation of fact and opinion. The work also emphasizes journalism currently being exerted in digital media, and in this sense, Chapter Five uses everything that has to do with narrative skills on the Internet, text editing and the addition of audiovisual resources, among other issues. Also deserves special attention Potter provides recommendations regarding the ethical principles of journalism and the various codes of conduct and legal issues that every journalist should know.
